People either face depression or mania, while some of them often alternate between the two types of episodes equally. Some people suffer severe and frequent mood disorders, while other experience only a few changes over a lifetime.

The symptoms of hypomania:

Hypomania is a less severe form of mania, people in this episode feel euphoric, productive and energetic. However, this phase is less critical, and people in this phase can carry on with their daily activities, and they never lose touch with reality. To others, people with hypomania never seems in the unusually good mood. However, these people often make bad decisions in life that can harm their life, reputation, and career. Moreover, hypomania can escalate to mania or often followed by severe depression episode.

Mania or ‘the high’:

In the manic phase, the patient has feelings of heightened creativity, energy and euphoria. People in this stage, often talk a mile a minute, are hyperactive and sleep very less. They may also feel like they have super powers, destined for greatness and invincible.
However, initially, this mania episode feels good, but gradually it gets worst. First, it has a tendency to go out of control. People often behave recklessly, gamble away all their saving, engage in an inappropriate sexual activity, make the foolish business investment. Or they become irritated, aggressive, make fights, lash out on others with no reason and become angry and annoyed for no reason. Some people even hear voices or become delusional.

In the past, bipolar depression was considered similar to regular depression, but from various researchers, it is proved that these two are significantly different from each other. Especially when it comes to treating these two types. Most people with bipolar disorder depression episode cannot be addressed with natural antidepressants – in fact, there is a high risk that the disorder can get worse when treated with antidepressants. These antidepressants may trigger mania or hypomania, causing rapid switching between these two phases, or interfere with other mood stabilizing drugs and worsen the symptoms of bipolar.

However, despite many similarities, some symptoms of bipolar disorder are more common and dangerous. For example, people with bipolar depression are more likely to feel guilt, irritability, unpredictable mood swings and restlessness. People with bipolar depression often speak and move slowly, sleep a lot and gain weight. They are more prone to developing psychotic depression – a condition in which the patient of bipolar disorder lost contact with reality and cannot fulfill his work or social duties.

A mixed episode of bipolar disorder shows collective symptoms of mania or hypomania and depression. Some of the common signs of mixed episode include depression combined with irritability, anxiety, insomnia, agitation, racing thoughts and distractibility. This weird combination of high energy and low mood makes for high risk of suicide.

Bipolar I disorder personality is often mania or a mixed episode – it is often described as classic manic-depression (a form of illness), usually characterized by at least one manic episode or mixed episode, proceeding with at least one episode of depression.

Bipolar II disorder Symptoms:

Bipolar II disorder personality is a mix of hypomania and depression. The person does not always experience full-blown manic episodes, in fact, he/she experiences hypomania and severed depression.

Cyclothymia:

Cyclothymia is a mix of hypomania and mild depression – it is the milder form of bipolar disorder that consists on cyclical mood changes. The symptoms are less severe than full-blown mania or depression episodes.
