Pregnancy Symptoms:

When women feel changes in their bodies after intercourse, they may investigate about a possible pregnancy. Since pregnancy is a big event in women’s life,  everything you need to know about pregnancy is pretty normal. Few of the most common ones are:

What should I know about early pregnancy symptoms?

  • What are the early signs of pregnancy?
  • What signs we should watch out?
  • Or what are the signs of pregnancy before missed period?
  • What are the symptoms of pregnancy?
  • When to see a doctor if I suspect a possible pregnancy?
  • What to do in early pregnancy, what should I know when it is an unwanted pregnancy?
  • What to do if you think you are pregnant?
  • What can I do if there are no symptoms of pregnancy, but I had unprotected sex?
  • How I found out I am pregnant before taking any pregnancy test?
  • What to do if you think you are pregnant?
  • What to do when you get pregnant, to get rid of an unwanted pregnancy?
  • When to see a doctor when pregnant?
  • What are the early pregnancy symptoms you should not ignore?
  • What are the symptoms of being pregnant for the first time?

Like any other thing pregnancy comes with specific symptoms which you should not ignore, especially if you have been trying to conceive or even if you are not ready for a surprise pregnancy.

Before seeing some clear signs of pregnancy, women start noticing that something strange start happening with them even before they get a confirmed news.

Here are some of the most common symptoms When I found out i am pregnant now:

  • Low energy levels
  • Sore and swollen breasts
  • Mood swings
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Sensitivity to different food items
  • Frequent urination
  • Cramping and spotting
  • Boost in sense of smell
  • Bloating
  • A missed period

These are considered pregnancy symptoms before a missed period, some may find them unusual pregnancy symptoms, however, doctors consider them normal.

Low Energy Levels:

Blame higher levels of progesterone (a hormone that helps in keeping the pregnancy); some women feel lower energy levels in the first trimester. “Women who never had a habit to nap suddenly start feeling a strong need for napping,” stated by Jeanne A. Conry MD, Ph.D.

Mood Swings:

Again the hormone spike makes you a complete emotional mess. Some women feel irritated to almost everything; some go into depression. Some feel extreme to everything and start stressing over everything. Tiredness and hunger can increase mood swings.

Some women may have arguments with their partners as signs that they are pregnant. (Let’s bear it guys, it’s for good only).

Hormonal changes occur during early pregnancy may leave you feeling super bloated all the time as soon as you conceive. During pregnancy, your body keeps more water and cause bloating. (The reason is higher level of progesterone) –– the feeling is similar to how you used to feel right before your period. That is the reason most women experience their clothes getting snug than usual at the waistline during early phase even when their uterus is still small.

Cramping And Spotting:

Cramping and spotting (small amount of blood is discharged which is slightly lighter than period blood).  Some women experience spotting little earlier than their period which is an indication of fertilized egg getting attached to the uterus.  In some cases, bleeding continues from sixth to week 12 which is considered normal. Approximately 25% pregnant women witness spotting (slight bleeding), says M. Deutchman, an American Family Physician.

At this stage your doctor can do an ultrasound to check the growth of baby, says Conroy.

Sore Breast:

Another sign of hormonal changes in the body, sore and swollen breasts. Tender breasts can indicate pregnancy as early as 1 to 2 weeks after conception. Some women often feel heavy or perkier breast as early as they conceive. (Get ready to buy new bras).

Dizziness Or Lightheadedness:

Earliest possible signs of pregnancy is feeling lightheaded or faint spells. The reason can be low blood pressure or hormones (higher progesterone levels). Progesterone is not only necessary to keep the pregnancy, but it is also needed to induce milk-producing glands in your breast.

why cant i get pregnant

Fatigue And Tiredness:

Fatigue and tiredness are the early birds of pregnancy as most women feel tired and fatigued during early days of pregnancy. The reason is that their bodies pump more blood to feed the fetus with appropriate nutrients. The low energy interval may start as early as in the first week of pregnancy.

Nausea And Vomiting:

Some women experience queasiness (morning sickness) right after they conceive, the symptoms can start from week 2 to week 8. However, severe nausea and vomiting usually show up until week 7 to 9.

Just found out i am pregnant then you will feel heartburn, vomiting, and pregnancy nausea, Corny says, eat small, healthy, protein-rich meals more frequent. Focus on better hydration, drink more water, diluted juices, organic teas, etc.  This may help in controlling aching stomach. Adding slices of cucumbers, strawberry can add taste to the water and help the fluid to go down easily. It is also recommended to use diluted fruit juices, red raspberry leaf and nettles tea (commonly known as pregnancy tea). Mint tea can help in digestion but can worsen heartburn symptoms; it’s better to avoid it.

Mint tea can help treat nausea but can make heartburn even worst.

Some women may suffer from frequent headaches in early weeks of pregnancy. The reason is hormonal changes that are causing headaches quite often.

Frequent Urination:

Most women start feeling a strong urge to pee more frequently than ever as soon as they conceive. This is because of a hormone called human Chorionic Gonadotropin, which is produced by their body in the early weeks of pregnancy. This hormone increases blood flow towards pelvic region ––– moreover, your growing uterus puts a lot of pressure on your bladder, together they make frequent trips to the bathroom.

However, it is important to take extra fluids to keep your body well hydrated, don’t worry about mid-night pee breaks.

Food Cravings and Strong Sense Of Smell:

Another important symptom of earliest possible signs of pregnancy is developing sensitivity to different foods. Some women feel nauseated when they smell certain food(read more about food for pregnant Women) or get craving for specific good groups (sensitivity varies with every individual). Some women link their heightened sense of smell to their pregnancy. Some women experience sickness towards their favorite scent – some women develop a strange taste in their mouth that lasts the whole pregnancy, says McLean.

Some women get conscious about their baby’s health as they cannot eat many food groups. Conry says, don’t worry about the baby, it is getting all its nutrients from the mother at this stage, it’s the mom who suffers from nutrition deficiency due to nausea during pregnancy.

At this stage it is important to have prenatal care (vitamins, How Much Folic Acid During Pregnancy etc), folic acid pregnancy prevents child defects. Take juices, smoothies whatever suits you (prefer organic stuff). Make sure you are not dehydrated, as long as you are well hydrated you will go through this phase easily. In the second trimester, you will feel much better.

And Finally a Missed Period:

signs of pregnancy before missed period We have already discussed. Generally, a missed period is considered a sure indicator of pregnancy. Women who are pretty regular on their period cannot see it coming on time, often think they have conceived. At this stage, they are advised to do a home pregnancy test before noticing any of the above-mentioned symptoms.

For women who are not regular on their monthly cycle or they do not track their cycle, pregnancy nausea, vomiting, food sensitivity, sore breast and frequent trips to bathroom indicate pregnancy before they miss their period. However, they still need to confirm am i pregnant test.

*Some women taking fertility, PCOS, thyroid or cancer treatment often have similar symptoms.

How to confirm a pregnancy?

  • What should I know about pregnancy confirmation?
  • How to confirm your pregnancy?
  • What to do when I find out I am pregnant?
  • When can I find out I am pregnant?
  • How soon should you see a doctor when pregnant to confirm your pregnancy?

Once you see very early pregnancy symptoms, it’s time to confirm your pregnancy. Whether it’s your planned pregnancy or comes as a surprise for you, the next step is to confirm it using early pregnancy test.

For many women taking up a pregnancy test could be a very stressing task and may bring out emotions of fear or excitement (or a combination of both). But knowing about your pregnancy as soon as possible can help you make a right decision.

Pregnancy Tests

What Are Pregnancy Tests?

Pregnancy tests are simple urine tests that show whether you are pregnant or not? They test for a specific hormone, Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). When a fertilized egg is attached to the lining of the uterus, hCG is produced. HCG is only produced when the woman is pregnant.

Here are some of the most common questions women ask about am i pregnant tests:

What should I ask before taking a pregnancy test?

  • What are different types of pregnancy tests?
  • How safe are EPT pregnancy tests?
  • Is there any free pregnancy test?
  • What to do when you think you’re pregnant?
  • What to do if I think I am pregnant?
  • When should I start seeing a doctor for pregnancy?
  • How reliable are online pregnancy test?
  • I have earliest possible signs of pregnancy before missed period, can I take a home pregnancy test?

When should I take a pregnancy test?

Is onlie Pregnancy Test Good?

It is recommended to take a pregnancy test as soon as you see a missed period or you think your period is late now.

Some pregnancy tests can provide accurate results even before a missed period. Read the instruction on pregnancy test box to see when the test will deliver best results. The tests become more accurate when you get closer to the date of your expected period date –– and become more effective when you missed your period.

*There are websites offering pregnancy test online but verifying their authenticity is vital before considering them.

There are different ways to conduct a pregnancy test; we are reviewing all the ways here:

Home pregnancy test (HPT):

There is a different type of home pregnancy test kits are available, costing around $15. These kits are used to test pregnancy at the comfort of your home and can be used right after you have missed your period.

There are some HPT kits that are very sensitive and can be used to seeing a missed period.

Home pregnancy test pictures

How home pregnancy kits work?

Home pregnancy kits detect the hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) — A type of hormone which is present in the urine (a type of hormone which is only produced in your body when you are pregnant).

There is a chemical used in these kit changes its color when it comes into contact with the hormone hCG. Every kit comes with its instruction and time duration. However, the average time taken is 10 minutes in delivering results.

What must you know about home pregnancy kits?

There are some precautions which you must know before using home pregnancy test kits:

  • Every kit comes with different applicator and instruction, but they all work similarly.
  • It is always recommended to use more than one HPT kits since they are inexpensive. It will provide more accurate tests.
  • It is recommended that the test should be taken more than once on different dates (once at the very first day you miss your period and also after missing your period) to get better results. In some women, detecting hCG levels early are difficult.
  • Home pregnancy kits may vary regarding their use, applicator and instruction, but they are easy to use. Every woman can use them in the comfort of their home.
  • These kits provide 99%- 100% accurate results, only if they are used correctly.

How to know about the HPT kit accuracy?

9 out of 10 pregnancy test kits provide 100% (99 out of 100 times) accurate results, only when they are used right after a missed period. They only become less effective when they are not used correctly, used too early or if its expiry date has been passed.

What if the pregnancy test kit is positive?

If you have used home pregnancy test kits and get a positive result, it means, ‘You are Pregnant.’ After getting a positive result, you should immediately visit a healthcare provide near you to confirm the news.

The health care provider will conduct some other tests. A health care provider can confirm the pregnancy and discuss the other options with you, in case you are unsure about what to do. Moreover, he/she will assist you by suggesting right type of prenatal care if you want to keep your pregnancy.

However, sometimes women can receive a false negative or missed period negative pregnancy test. Here is what it means?

What is the meaning of getting a false negative?

Getting a false negative or missed period negative pregnancy test means you are pregnant but home pregnancy test shows you aren’t.

Why you get a false negative?

In some cases, women used HPT kits too early — the time when their hCG levels are low and cannot be determined (hCG a hormone indicates pregnancy).  The hormone has developed anywhere from 6 to 1 days after ovulation.

Another reason for getting a false negative is not knowing the ovulation date. In some women, the date is quite unpredictable because it happens on a different day. This is truer with women having an irregular cycle.

Why you get a false positive test result?

Getting a false positive means you are not pregnant but your home pregnancy test show you are.

When women don’t follow all the instruction written on HPT kits, they increase the possibility of getting a false positive test result.

This can also happen when you read the test before recommended reaction time (3-5 minutes). OR you have used an expired test kit.

And in case you are taking some infertility treatments, or given hCG injections, there are chances to get a false positive.

Women undergoing cancer or other medical conditions may have higher hCG levels that can affect the efficiency of HPT kits.

What should I do when I don’t understand the result?

Sometimes women find it difficult to understand the result of home pregnancy test – or they cannot understand what false negative or false positive is.

negative pregnancy test

To avoid such confusions, to confirm pregnancy it is recommended to go through some clinical tests (conducted in clinics/healthcare centers/gynecologist). Visiting a healthcare provider not only confirm your pregnancy but help in deciding the best option and prenatal care.

What are clinical tests?

These tests are conduction under the supervision of a medical practitioner or gynecologist. These tests are conducted to check your urine or blood for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG: a hormone that is produced right after a fertilized egg is attached to the walls of the uterus of women).

How does Clinical Urine Test confirm pregnancy?

A urine test is taken to confirm pregnancy and is usually performed at a clinic or healthcare center. However, the urine test is quite similar to HPT test kits, but they are taken under the supervision of a medical expert that is why you will get accurate results by eliminating all possible mistakes.

The test accuracy rate is 97% to 99%.

However, a clinical urine test is comparatively expensive than Home pregnancy test kits.

Some doctors suggest blood tests as well to confirm a pregnancy. However, blood tests are performed in specific cases only.

How does Blood Test Confirm Pregnancy?

To confirm pregnancy often, your gynecologist recommends going for a blood test. The test is conducted in the laboratory to detect the presence of hCG in your body. Blood tests are used to determine hCG levels in blood earlier than urine tests.

How many types of blood tests can be conducted?

Two different types of blood tests can be conducted to confirm pregnancy. They both have different efficiency levels.

Quantitative hCG Blood Test:

The test will determine exact levels of hCG levels in your blood. The test is used to find the lowest levels of hCG. These tests are conducted to check the concentration of hCG that will help in tracking any problems during pregnancy. Blood tests are often combined with other tests to determine a tubal (ectopic) pregnancy or to determine fall in hCG levels when she conceives after a miscarriage.

QuantitivehCG blood tests provide more accurate results and often given priority over quantitative one.

Qualitative hCG blood test:

This test will only determine the presence of hCG in your body and gives an answer in a simple “Yes” or “No” to pregnancy.

Doctors often recommend this type of test with 10 days after a missed period to confirm “Are you pregnant.”

What should I know before undergoing any tests?

In some cases, determining hCG levels is difficult because of an irregular cycle that is why doctors use different methods.

They may repeat different times with the gap of some days to get accurate results. They often recommend an ultrasound.

Why does doctor recommend an internal examination to confirm my pregnancy?

Doctors sometimes recommend going for an internal examination to confirm a pregnancy within 2 weeks after a missed period. The doctor will examine uterus and cervix (the lowest part of the womb/uterus).

And if you are pregnant, the doctor can see a change in size, color and texture of uterus (it will turn soft and grow). These changes can happen in early weeks of pregnancy and are considered to be the early signs of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Options:

  • Just found out I am pregnant, how do I know about my options?
  • Just found out I am pregnant what do I do?
  • I just found out I am pregnant now what are the possibilities I can have now?
  • What are the options I may have now?

Once your pregnancy is confirmed, it’s time to think about your options.

  • Choosing an appropriate option is the next step, a decision only you can make.
  • You can have a baby when you are ready because parenting is a lifelong commitment.

It is true many of us want to be parents someday, while some of us never want to become parents and there are many who are unsure about parenthood. Before considering a pregnancy and having a child, there are three main options which you can consider.

  • Continue your pregnancy/parenting
  • Termination of pregnancy
  • Adoption

Why Should I Look For A Pregnancy Adviser When I found out I am pregnant?

I am pregnant! And I am not happy, OR I am confused who can help me, probably meeting with a pregnancy advisor is the best solution.

What you should do after hearing that “you are pregnant” remains your decision, but like most women you can discuss your options with a healthcare professional or a gynecologist – and some prefer discussing with their partner, friend of a close family member.

It is very helpful to pick someone supportive, who not only listened to your fears, expectations but give you the best possible advice (be very careful in picking your support).

In case there is no one in your family who can give you an unbiased advice, you can seek help from your local Planned Parenthood health center, their staff is specially trained, and talk to you about all your options. (Beware of those co-called crisis pregnancy centers they are fake, lake the resources as well and will limit your options as most of them are anti-abortion).

How To Know Abortion Is The Right Option For Me?

What are the methods of Abortion

On an average, 3 in 10 women in the United States will have to abort one pregnancy the time they reach 45 in age. Women can choose abortion due to several reasons, such as:

Women can choose abortion due to several reasons:

  • They have a fetal health problem.
  • They have career goals.
  • They care about their family health and not ready to take more responsibilities.
  • Their partner is not ready for parenting a child.
  • They cannot take care of another toddler because their first baby is not even a year old.
  • They are broke and have no other financial resource.
  • They are having early pregnancy bleeding.
  • Their pregnancy is caused by sexual abuse (rape) and traumatized.
  • They are dealing with ectopic pregnancy (a serious pregnancy complication when the fertilized egg implants to the outer layer of uterus wall).

If you think abortion is the right option for you, it is recommended to think and discuss with a professional about the advantage and disadvantage of abortion. Moreover, they will assist you the right way to terminate a surprised pregnancy.

What Is The Most Suitable Abortion Procedure For Me?

Aborting a pregnancy is not possible without the help of a professional, so always seek right assistance.

Your doctor can suggest you a suitable abortion method based on your medical condition, weeks of pregnancy and your comfort.

There are two most reliable methods that are used to terminate an unwanted pregnancy.

  • Pill method OR medical abortion
  • Surgical method (clinical procedure)

However, there are some concerns such as health issues, future complications, laws on pregnancy termination.

What Is A Pill Method?

A Pill method or medical abortion method involves a pill that is given to the expecting mother to terminate a pregnancy. The Pill is also known as an “abortion pill” or “Mifepristone” in very early weeks of pregnancy (within nine weeks of pregnancy from the day of a missed period).

How The Pill Works?

missed period negative pregnancy test birth control pill

The pill block progesterone (a hormone that is responsible for keeping the pregnancy) – without progesterone your body (the lining of the uterus) cannot hold the pregnancy. When the pill is used orally, and it breaks the lining of the uterus in result bleeding occurs.

How Effective Is The Pill Method?

The Pill method is considered very safe – the efficiency rate is up to 97%.

The first abortion pill is given at the doctor’s clinic and the second one is given for home. In result you might feel cramps and bleed, the bleeding can be heavy or lightweight (with or without clots like regular period or miscarriage). Some women also feel nauseated, dizzy, and weak and have to go to the washroom due to loose stools.

  • It is imperative and recommended to have someone at your side.
  • In a case of emergency, the best way is to rush to the healthcare professional.

How Do I Know The Pill Method Is Safe?

In most cases, the pill method is considered safe, however, removing the possibility of any complication can never be eliminated.

However, there are fewer cases where someone gets an allergic reaction to the pill, or suffer from heavy bleeding and infection. It is also possible that some part of pregnancy is left inside the womb or left attach to the outer layer of the uterus.

Moreover, in some cases, the abortion pill does not work, (a medical complications or your pregnancy is mature than week 9).

In such cases, doctors recommended surgical abortion.

What Is A Surgical Abortion Method?

A surgical abortion is a type of clinical procedure that is used to terminate the pregnancy. A gynecologist or a trained nurse can perform the procedure in a clinic, outpatient office or a hospital.

The procedure is performed when the pregnancy is 16 weeks old after the missed period.

How Is The Medical Procedure Performed?

The surgical procedure is conducted in the following step:

  • First, the expecting woman is given a painkiller to numb the cervix.
  • Once the cervix is completely numb, a thin tube is inserted gradually inside the vagina that goes through the cervix into the uterus. The tube is linked to a vacuum which is used to suck the pregnancy. Once it is placed at the right place (uterus), it sucks the pregnancy out.
  • Soft tissues are removed by using a medical instrument called “curette.”

Once it is done, the doctor prescribes the woman a course of antibiotic and best rest. However, In a case of heavy bleeding, fever, pain or tenderness in the abdomen area, vaginal discharge and odor that looks like puss – you are advised to visit the doctor immediately.

How Is The Surgical Abortion Method Safe?

When the surgical procedure is done by a professionally trained nurse or a medical doctor, then it is considered safe. However, surgical abortion may get some worst complications, such as:

  • Infection of the uterus and Fallopian tubes.
  • Heavy bleeding (sometimes with cramping and pain).
  • Some women may suffer from cervix complications.

Illegal abortions may have complications and are very expensive in different countries including U.S.

When Should I Go For Abortion?

After confirming your pregnancy either through an at-home pregnancy kit or some clinical tests, start thinking about your options.  And if abortion is your final decision, your next step should be to find the right clinic offering abortions. You can take suggestions from your closed family member or relatives or look online (Government has launched some helpful facilities) about a reliable clinic or doctor providing this facility. Moreover, it is important to discuss the rules on abortion (think about your insurance policy as well as most health insurance companies do not cover abortions).

In most countries including the United States, not everyone provides abortion facility.

What Is The Total Cost Of Abortion?

Calculating total cost of abortion is difficult as it varies from clinic to clinic and on state laws – moreover, it depends on the type of abortion procedure you are advised and the complications you may get afterward.

What Are The Long-Term Risks Of Abortions?

Many women who want to terminate their surprise pregnancy have to deal with many misconceptions such as breast cancer, complications in future pregnancies, ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages or infant issues linked to abortion.

However, safe and uncomplicated (done by a trained professional) abortion does not cause any problem for future pregnancies.

What Kind Of Emotions Will I Have After An Abortion?

Terminating a pregnancy can be a very emotional event as big as ending a relationship or losing a job or even becoming a parent. There is no ‘correct’ word to express how a woman can feel after aborting her pregnancy. Some women suffer from depression, guilt, regret, sad and the some even go traumatized. While some women easily go through this phase.

  • However, severe emotional sensitivity after an abortion is as common as having postpartum depression.
  • Women with a history of emotional problems are more likely to fell in depression after an abortion especially if she has to terminate a wanted pregnancy.
  • If you are one of those, then seek a post-abortion counseling service for emotional support resources and information helpful in dealing depression and negative feelings.

What If I Want To Go With Adoption?

Adoption is when you choose another family to raise your newborn by signing a permanent and legal agreement. Millions of woman face unplanned pregnancies ever year, and due to some complications they have to keep their pregnancies – often opt for adoption.

There are several reasons why women chose adoption for their newborn, such as:

  • They are not prepared to raise a child.
  • They are not financially strong to raise a child.
  • They can afford to be a single parent.
  • They are already a parent and want to be the best parent for their kids.
  • It is the right time in their life to raise a child.
  • They are too young to be a parent.
  • They have future goals to achieve, such as career, studies before becoming a parent.
  • They believe that someone else can parent their child better.
  • They were sexually assaulted or were in an abusive relationship.
  • They just do not want to be a parent now.

Everyone have their valid reason for choosing an adoption – from family issues to funding child’s schooling; many people consider every single aspect before making a decision. However, only you can decide whether it is the right decision for you and your child or not.

It is recommended to ask few question before choosing adoption as your final decision, they are:

  • Am I in the right place to let someone else raise my child?
  • Do I calculate and measure my financial assets and support system realistically?
  • Am I really prepared to keep my pregnancy and then giving my baby to someone else?
  • Do I believe that my child will be treated well by someone else (adoptive parents)?
  • Will I feel comfortable if I am allowed to visit my child 2-3 times a year, or never allowed to do so?
  • How strong is my support system to help me transition peacefully through pregnancy, birth, and adoption?
  • Am I pressurized to put my child into adoption?

There are a lot of things that matters for your and your child’s future, however, you may suffer from depression or guilt afterward. So it is recommended to discuss everything with your partner, or a closed family member or with a parenting and adoption counselor (some clinics provide this facility as well).

Is There Any Type Of Adoption I Can Choose from?

There are two various kinds of adoption, open and closed.

Open Adoption:

Open adoption is a kind of adoption where the parent(s) and the adopting family meets each other, make up a relationship which continues to build as the child grows. Sometimes, parents arrange frequent meetings to know more about the family and sometimes there are only one meeting (depends on situation).

Most adoptions in UnitedStates are open.

Closed Adoption:

In Closed Adoption, parents and adoptive family have no to limited interaction with the adopting family. They have no interaction once the adoption process is finished.  People choose closed adoption when they want to keep more privacy.

However, both parents and adoptive family should at least arrange one meeting and discuss what kind of relationship they want to have with each other and the child. How often they can call, can they meet their kid and how to get the updates about their child? Most couples opt for open adoption because they want to get in touch with their baby somehow.

How Can I Find Someone For Adoption?

There are different ways you can put the child for adoption, through an adoption agency or to an independent family.

Adoption Agencies:

There are state-licensed adoption organizations that provide counseling on adoption. It is important to work with an agency that helps you explore an unbiased adoption decision.

They help you provide a pool of verified adoptive families and assist you in choosing the best option.

If you cannot find any adoption agency, then you can choose from independent adoption. Independent adoptions are decided with the help of a lawyer known as “adoption attorneys.”  It is best if you have your family lawyer who can help you through the tough legal formalities.

Do I Need To Find Birth Parents After A Closed Adoption?

Sometimes, birth parents or adoption parents want to see each other after a closed adoption. In such situation, you might find help in adoption registers or can consult adoption agencies.  However, it is not an easy, so if you have plans to meet your child or the adoptive family you should choose an open adoption.

Adoption is legal and is backed by state laws, and an adoption must be approved by a state judge (adoption laws can be different in every state/country). It is recommended to consult a legal service provider if you are planning to go for adoption.

What If I Change My Decision About Adoption?

It happens, when women somehow want to change their decision of adoption and raise their kid on their own. Several legal counselors can help you in taking back your adoption petition.

What Should I Know If I Chose To Keep My Pregnancy and parent my child?

Millions of women face surprised pregnancies or even if it is on your wish list, you must think the different perspective of becoming a mother. Here are few of the most questions women seek answers for when they chose to become a parent.

How to know parenting is the right option for me?

Every woman have a different set of emotions when they hear about their pregnancy (a planned or unplanned). They have to deal with various situation and mindsets. She is the only one who should decide why it is the right option for her. However, it is advised to consider her present situation, future goals, whether she is a single parent or will have her partner to share the financial responsibilities.

What Should I Know About Raising A Child?

Giving birth to a child to raising him/her is a lifelong commitment, and it is important to do some research on it. And if you are already a parent then you must think about parenting another child and his/her responsibilities.

Here are few questions you must ask yourself before finalizing your parenting decision.

What If I Take Parenting as My Option what should I know?

  • Am I ready to raise a child?
  • Do I want a child, can I take care of him/her properly?
  • Am I ready to fulfill baby’s financial needs, food, schooling, etc.?
  • Will I have a support of my partner, family or friends?
  • Can I bear the pain of delivery and raising an infant?
  • How important it is for me to calculate my financial strength?
  • How having a child can affect my relationship with my partner?
  • Am I pressurized to have a child?

Think about all these answers means to you, moreover, to get over from any confusion you can discuss with your partner or close family member or even seek a professional counselors help.

Am I pressurized to have a child?

In such cases, trained counselors can help you in making an unbiased decision. Moreover, they can guide you about the best possible options and assist you in preparing for your commitments.

How Soon Should I Decide?

Whether you are ready to parent your child or go for adoption, as soon as your decision is final you should start prenatal care.

  • Go for an early pregnancy medical examination – to make sure you have a healthy pregnancy – make regular appointments with your doctor, ask for vitamins prescription and discuss possibilities of having a complication.
  • There are certain risks involves in every pregnancy for a woman – from discomforting nausea and vomiting to some serious risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure to some fetal ones. That is why an early and regular medical checkups are crucial.
  • Considering an initial medical examination is as important as parenting a child – it is recommended not to wait too long. You should know that abortions are safe, but they can become risky when the pregnancy goes long.

Do I Need To Think About The Support I Need To Raise A Child?

Raising a kid is a hard job – you will need good, physical and financial assistance as it’s a lifelong commitment.

Children have many needs to be fulfilled; they will depend on you for shelter, affection, food, guidance, and so many other things. Parenting is not a 9 to 5 job – you either wake up at three from a deep sleep or you never slept because your toddler is not in the mood to sleep.

It is often very frustrating and tiring because your child’s need will constantly change and so will you to meet those needs. You might get into depression or feel guilty for not doing anything for your kid – to feel good about yourself and your parenting you might need someone to help you.

However, if you plan ahead, get your answers before the time you might deal with such situations in a comfortable way. You should know that you have all the resources to take care of a child? For example:

  • You will need TIME to take care of your child and to make his school plans. Can you put your career on hold?
  • Energy and financial resources: children need lots of your energy as well as material things such as clothes, diapers, food, medicines, you must know you have sufficient resources to provide these services.

What Should I Need To Know If I Am A Single Parent?

Many people who choose to become a single mother or find themselves in the single parenting face more challenges than couple parenting. However, if you gather right resources and planning, you can meet the challenges better.

If you have planned for single parenting, you can talk about this with your family and friends about the help you might need.

  • You can calculate how much energy, time and money you will need to raise your kid all alone. Be realistic in calculating how much money you can get from your family and friends. There will be some who can help you abundantly while some cannot, make sure your estimation is based on real facts and figures.
  • If you are planning to seek government support, you should know your country/stat laws. Keep in mind that your country/state will only cover few things for you.
  • Raising a child all alone can have some benefits too you can raise your child on your own without making any compromises with your partners.

Whether you want to go for adoption or want to raise your child on your own, the next step is to know about pregnancy stages.

Due date calculator

What is gestational age?

To measure pregnancy doctors use “gestational age”, the time is calculated on the first day of a woman’s last menstrual period (LMP).

Most woman think that their pregnancy last for nine months, which is true. But since the pregnancy is measured from woman’s last period (3 – 4 weeks before she is pregnant) – that is why the pregnancy is counted to 9 months. However, a full-term pregnancy last about 40 weeks from LMP or roughly 10 months.

Many woman cannot tell the exact date of their last menstrual period – that’s OK. Doctor conduct an ultrasound to know gestational age.

Why should I know baby’s due date?

Right after the pregnancy is confirmed your gynecologist/ midwife will inform you when your baby is due or the ‘the estimated date of confinement’ (EDC). The due date is calculated by adding 40 weeks to the time of the beginning of the last period.

Knowing the due date will help you know when you should get admitted to the hospital.

However, the due date can change due to different reasons, but even a rough estimation is helpful in preparing for labor and delivery.

The baby’s brain development is much faster now. However, her lungs will continue developing. (In case of pre-term delivery, the baby will need lots of medical help to make sure her lungs start functioning).

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

27 weeks pregnant mother may feel a tickling sensation like hiccups.

You might suffer from backaches, leg cramps especially during the night, however, days have no exception. The reason is that your uterus is expanding and putting the burden on your ligaments and veins. (A good massage or stretches can ease the pain).

Your baby will take the form of a newborn baby as your second trimester will be ending here.

Third Trimester:

Congratulations! Your baby is six months old, and there are few months left in his/her arrival.

The baby will start taking final shape and getting ready to be greeted in our world.

However, the expectant mother will have worst digestive issues, back pain, and leg cramps. She may have visible changes in her skin especially those stretch marks.

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

The baby is growing in full swing as you are 28 weeks pregnant you will start feeling your skin stretching.

You might experience contraction or Braxton Hicks – this will be known as intermittent stretching in the uterus (abdomen area).

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

As you are 31 weeks pregnant, you will start noticing the tightness in your uterus more often; these contractions are known as Braxton Hicks (they can start from the second trimester).

These contractions last up to 30 seconds (at this stage they are painless and irregular). However, if these contractions are frequent (with or without pain) may indicate preterm labor.

For those who observe frequent contractions (four in one hour) with the vaginal discharge (pinkish, or spotted with blood), pain in lower abdomen or lower back then you must visit your doctor as you may be entering in preterm labor.

  • Week 32 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

She will have visible hair (peachy frizz).

The baby will start gaining half or one-third or her total weight in these seven weeks as she is getting ready to live outside the womb.

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

As you are 32 weeks pregnant, you may suffer from shortness of breath, indigestion, and acid refluxes as your baby is growing to bigger size – to accommodate baby’s growing needs your blood volume will increase up to 40 to 50 percent.

As you are 7 months pregnant, your joints and ligaments joining your pelvic bone with the spine start losing up (getting ready for delivery) due to hormonal changes. You might feel walking, sitting or standing for extended periods of time very difficult.

Your back will hurt a lot; it is advised to sleep under pillows and eat smaller meals. In case, you feel back pain, let your doctor or midwife know about it.

  • Week 33 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby measures 17 inches mark, weighing around 4 pounds.

The baby is shedding her wrinkled skin, forming a more uniform, alien-like appearance.

The child’s skeleton is getting harder forming to more human-like experience. However, bones are not fused which will make it easier for the baby to pass through the birth canal. (These bones do not fuse together until the baby reach adulthood, moreover, during birth the pressure is so intense that most babies are born with a cone-like head).

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

For 34 week pregnant mother there is a good news – as pre-term medical problems for the infant is reduced if she is delivered now, as babies born between weeks 34 to 37 are fully developed and have lesser complications and health concerns.

They may get short term problems, but stay safe from fetal health issues.

Some of the expectantmother’s will often witness some red bumps on their belly called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP). 1% of expectant mothers may develop this condition, which is not very harmful, but can be uncomfortable. In the case of anything severe, inform your doctor at your earliest.

You will become stressed, anxious and suffer from low energy levels, blame your increasing weight, troubling sleep, and pee breaks during night. To avoid discomfort, avoid getting up too fast, as your legs and feet have a pool of blood that may cause dizziness and temporary drop in blood pressure.

You should start limiting your activities and start saving up your energy for labor and post-delivery activities.

At this point, you may be informed about C-section surgery.

*about 33% women in America deliver babies through cesarean sections every year, and in most cases, their surgery is planned.

  • Week 35 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby measure 18 inches an approximate size of a honeydew melon.

The baby is taking more space as her body parts are developed completely – from this week onwards your baby will keep gaining weight.

Her lung is ready and will start producing waste.

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

The baby is gaining weight causing your uterus to reach your ribs – this will increase gastrointestinal distress, digestive issues such as acid reflux, etc. (typical 8 months pregnancy symptoms).

You will keep feeling your baby’s kicks and somersault, but their intensity is mild.

You will be examined every other week for the presence of group B streptococcus (GBS – a kind of bacterium) may develop inside your vagina and rectal. (GBS is considered harmless until it is not passed to the baby during birth, if it happens, it can cause fetal health issues, such as, meningitis, blood infection or pneumonia.

Above 30% women may have GBS that stays hidden until they are screened. Doctors treat the bacterial infection using IV antibiotics during labor to protect the baby from getting an infection.

  • Week 36 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby is gaining 1 ounce every day and now reach 6 pounds of weight.

The baby starts shedding its waxy coating (vernix caseosa – which has covered her skin for months to protect baby from amniotic fluid), and her hair start covering her body.(The baby will swallow this and some other fluids and will pass in the form of his first bowel movement).

The baby starts moving down to the pelvic area as it is getting ready for the delivery.

At this stage, your doctor or midwife will schedule external cephalic version to make your baby in the head down form (cephalic version is the pressure applied using hand movements to create a head down movement).

Babies who born by week 37 are called “pre-term,” by week 41 are called “late-term” and by 42 are called “post-term.”

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

Your baby is getting bigger making it difficult for you to digest bigger meals. Try having small meals throughout the day.

  • Week 37 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby will mature his lungs and develop the brain in these few weeks and will continue gaining weight.

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

You will have more frequent and intense Braxton Hicks with some vaginal discharge.

Your doctor may examine you for a Group B strep culture.

Getting a good night sleep will become more difficult now.

Your weight will be increasing, making everything very uncomfortable, however, your doctor will wait till week 39 for C-section (especially if she is repeating a C-section).

You may start planning more seriously about labor and post pregnancy clothes or how you can design your baby’s nursery.

  • Week 38 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby weighs just about 7 pounds and measure 19 inches long.

Her skin is plumped up, and she has fully developed organs, almost ready to come out to be greeted.

The baby will develop a firm grasp which you will feel right after her birth when you hold her hands.

  • What Can Happen To The Rupture Mother At This Stage?

You will start noticing your feet and legs swollen up which is normal, however, if the swelling gets painful to discuss with your doctor.

You may have blurry vision or your eyes become too sensitive to light. Or you see a sudden increase in your weight, intense abdominal pain, nausea, or breast tenderness talk to your doctor immediately as you may at risk of preeclampsia.

  • Week 39 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby may become little heavier than a small watermelon, measuring 20 inches long and weighing over 7 pounds (an average baby weight).

Her out skin getting replaced by the new skin layer.

By this week your baby is entered in full-term pregnancy, and she/she is almost ready to be welcomed into our world.

And if it is a boy, you may have to face complications, severe side effects of pregnancy and may have a prolong pregnancy nausea.

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

Your doctor of midwife may examine your cervix and check if it is softening, dilating or effacing (thinning and opening) or ripping to determine baby’s position and growth. They might start guessing baby’s birth date and time.

At this stage, you are advised to watch your baby’s movement very carefully. Watch if there is a sudden slowdown in her activity, immediately call your doctor as it may an indicator of some serious complication (as healthy baby stays active until the time of delivery).

If your water (sometimes big sluggish fluid and in some cases just a few drops) broke rush to your doctor.

In case, your due date has been passed; your doctor will schedule an ultrasound for fetal testing and screening. If you reach week 40, he/she will determine whether or not to continue your pregnancy.

  • Week 40 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby measures 20 inches, weighing little more than 7 pounds, an approximate size of a pumpkin from head to toe.

However, her skull bones are not yet fused completely this will allow your baby to “mold” herself while passing through the birth canal. (Due to this some babies are born with pointed noggin which will go away gradually).

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

If you have passed your due date, do not get anxious as only a few deliver their baby on the due date. It is because some women cannot determine the exact date of ovulation.

At this stage, your doctor may conduct a biophysical profile (BPP) —– a kind of ultrasound to look into your baby’s movements and position, breathing movement — the amount of amniotic fluid to check how placenta is supporting the baby — her muscle tone, how well the baby is moving them. (The doctor may conduct another test or just advise an advanced BPP to measure the amount of amniotic fluid.)

In case of low amniotic fluid or some serious complication, you can be induced in pregnancy labor, or your baby is delivered through C-section.

  • Week 41 Signs, Symptoms and Pictures:

The baby measures little over than 20 inches, weighing around 8 pounds or more at this week.

Your baby is almost ready to be greeted in this world.

What can happen to the expectant mother at this stage?

Most pregnancies ended at week 41 as women may go to labor OR her doctor induce it.

  • What Can Happen To The Expectant Mother At This Stage?

You may suffer from anxiety, fear of getting a C-section or may be due to passing your due date. You just need to recall that your baby will come out healthy and you won’t stay pregnant for the rest of your life.

Most women go into labor or in coming few days or even earlier sometimes. And if it does not happen your doctor will use medical ways to induce labor.

Labor and Giving Birth

What you should know about labor pain

  • What is labor pain?
  • What are the different phases of labor pain?
  • What should I know about vaginal birth?
  • What should I know about a C-section?
  • What really happens during labor?
  • How to manage labor pain?

Once the labor pain is started (naturally or artificially), it’s the time to deliver your baby.

What Is Labor Pain?

Labor pain is an indicator that your baby is ready for delivery. However, there is no exact way to know when the pain will start, so you are asked to keep observing baby’s movement and signs your body will give.

However, if you closely watch your body will start giving you symptoms few weeks before you are ready for delivery. In fact, your body will start preparing for labor a month before giving birth.

And if the women does not have contractions till week 42, the doctor may induce labor using two different methods.

The method used to induce labor is decided after examining your cervix.

Membrane Rapturing:

In some cases, your doctor may rupture your membrane to induce labor.

Pill Method:

Sometimes your doctor will suggest a drug called oxytocin (Pitocin) to start a contraction.

And after all, if the women are still not getting contractions, the doctor will go straight to C-section.

Commonly doctors do not wait for two weeks to prevent any medical complication. As you pass your 2nd week, your pregnancy is considering stalled and harmful for you and your baby.

Giving Birth:

What you should know about giving birth
  • What you should know about birth process?
  • What are the three stages of birth process?
  • How Dilation and Effacement of the Cervix happen?
  • What can happen during Pushing and Giving Birth?
  • What is placenta delivery?

How Is The Birth Process Initiated?

The birth process gets started right after the woman goes into labor.  Since every birth is unique, no one can set a standard. However, some phases happen at every birth.

Stage1: Dilation and Effacement of the Cervix:

Stage 2: Pushing and Giving Birth

Stage3: Placenta delivery

How Dilation And Effacement Of The Cervix Happen?

Stage1: Dilation and Effacement of the Cervix:

Phase 1 is divided further into three different stages, such as:

Early phase:

Early or latent phase start when the cervix dilates from 0 to 3-4 centimeters.  For the first timer, the process will take 6 to 10 hours, while for a second timer the duration may be short. Some women may feel abdominal pain during cervix dilation, while for some, the water broke with a pinkish vaginal discharge.

Some women may get strong contractions with no dilation in the cervix.

At this stage, a woman with mild and bearable contractions can think about the next phase. They can also take a mild walk to feel good.

Active Phase:

During active phase the cervix may dilate up to 7 centimeters, at this stage, some women may be an intensity of labor. This process will take 6 to 7 hours on average, however, can get shorter in some cases.

During this phase, a woman will feel persistent and steady contractions gradually getting more intense with just 3-5 minutes difference. The woman may get an intense feeling in her abdomen, lower back or thighs. Some women may have pinkish or brownish vaginal discharge.

What to Do At This Stage?

To deal with the intensity of contraction, it is recommended to free up your bladder, take more fluids, and you can practice some breathing techniques (yoga, meditation, and some hypnosis sessions can work).

You may ask for a labor partner he/she can be your partner, nurse or a closed relative – if you already have one ask them to stay close to you.

In the case of a home birth seek help from your partner for eliminating stress. Or you can have home birth with the help of a midwife (You can ask your close friends/family member/online forums to get helpful tips for a successful home birth).

Some doctors (in some countries most woman) are given epidural (a pain relieving drug that is injected into mother’s spine to reduce labor pain), you should discuss it with your doctor.

Phase 3: Transition Phase:

The transition phase is the final phase of cervix dilation, and it can last up to 20 minutes to approximate 2 hours for first timers and may get shorter in subsequent pregnancies.

During this phase, the contractions may get more intense, 1 to 2 contractions with minutes apart.

You may have nausea, shakiness, anxiety, and fatigue during this phase. The body is working hard in getting ready for delivery, some women may feel an urge to push down (due to heavy pressure in the rectal area), and however, they are not allowed to do so until they get a signal from their doctor.

What Should You Do At This Stage?

You should continue your breathing and mediation exercises as you have to bypass the urge to push down.

Stage 2: Pushing and Giving Birth:

What can happen during Pushing and Giving Birth?

The cervix is dilated, a woman enters the second stage of delivery. For first timers, this phase may take a half hour to 2 hours.

Your cervix is finally dilated, and your gynecologist will signal you to push down little more.  Some women still feel contraction; some feel nauseated.

As you push down, women can get breathless, fatigued and exhausted; it’s because you have been doing one of the toughest workouts of your life. Moreover, your vagina and perineal areas will cause intense pain as the baby’s head start coming out of the vaginal opening.

In some cases, doctors made an incision in vagina and rectum called episiotomy to widen the vaginal opening. The doctor will ask you to push more gently to allow your baby’s head, and body comes down. You will need one last push, and your baby will be out.

Congratulations, your baby is finally out and you are a parent now. You may listen him/her crying, which is and early indicator of baby’s health.

*Right after your baby is gone to further medical tests.

Stage 3: Placenta Delivery:

What is placenta delivery?

This is the last and probably the most painful phase that may take few minutes to half an hour.

Once your baby is out, but you have to push more to expel the placenta causing you intense pain and cramping.

Some doctors ask you to put your newborn on your breast to make uterine contractions stimulation OR give our abdominal area a massage for placenta separation.

The delivery phase is completed here; you may be drained fully so make sure to have a shut eye.
